Course Description: The significance of the relationship between oral health and overall health continues to be stressed in medical literature. Dental professionals have a responsibility to educate patients about the connection between nutrition, diet, and oral health. As such, it is essential for dental hygienists to have a comprehensive understanding of the processes involved in conducting a thorough nutritional assessment. This understanding will help dental professionals effectively gather information about the dietary habits of their patients and use the findings to recognize key factors in the oral-systemic relationship. The outcomes from the dietary assessment will also position the dental hygienist to successfully provide nutritional counseling to patients with the goal of promoting successful behavior change toward whole-body health.
