Course Description: Patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) are at an elevated risk of developing periodontal disease. This relationship is two-way and multifactorial. Some of these factors include increased levels of inflammatory markers in gingival tissues, bone abnormalities, medications, and oxidative stress in patients with renal disease. In addition, diabetes and hypertension are two other systemic conditions linked to both periodontal diseases and renal disease, which can exacerbate risk for one or both conditions. Course Description: Dentistry is an effective health care field that can impact Alzheimer's disease. Through prevention and education, dental professionals can positively impact those who suffer from Alzheimer's disease. Dental providers use an arsenal of assessment protocols directly coinciding with modifiable Alzheimer's risk factors every day. Oral health professionals can provide innovative insight, reaching the public in ways other health care providers may not consider. Alzheimer's is a condition with various etiologies and pathophysiological processes. Some of these include cardiovascular health, smoking, sleep, inflammatory pathogens, and diabetes. In the United States, dental providers assess each of these factors daily and can be instrumental in educating patients on the influence of these factors on dementia prevention.
